Explore the official answer and the simple reasoning behind this Fermi estimate.

2QUESTION 2 OF 3

Answer & explanation

The official answer, with Fermi’s reasoning step by step.

Answer & explanation

Official answer

100

bones

How to estimate it

Fermi’s official “Napkin math”

The easiest place to start is the 206 bones in a skeleton. How many go with one hand? About three per finger, one behind each finger in the palm, and maybe 5 in the wrist. A foot is built much the same.

Bones in a skeleton
206
One hand: 15 finger + 5 palm + 5 wrist
≈ 25
25 × 4 hands and feet
≈ 100 lost
206 − 100
≈ 106

Rounded assumptions may give a slightly different estimate. The official answer above is the game’s reference value.

Source calculation & reference
Each hand: 8 wrist + 5 palm + 14 finger bones
27
Each foot: 7 tarsals + 5 metatarsals + 14 toe bones
26
(27 + 26) × 2
106
206 − 106
100
