Answer & explanation
The official answer, with Fermi’s reasoning step by step.
Answer & explanation
Official answer
176,000
athletes
How to estimate it
Fermi’s official “Napkin math”
There have been about 30 Summer Games and 25 Winter ones. Today they hold about 10,000 and 3,000 athletes, but the early ones were tiny, so call it half that. How many come back for another Games? Plenty, so knock off a quarter.
- 30 Summer × 5,000
- 150,000
- 25 Winter × 1,500
- + 37,500
- Repeat Olympians
- × 3/4
- 190,000 × 3/4
- ≈ 140,000
Rounded assumptions may give a slightly different estimate. The official answer above is the game’s reference value.
